I hear it all the time—parents hesitating to book a session because they’re worried about how their kids will behave. Maybe your toddler has unpredictable moods, your little one never sits still, or your child isn’t a fan of the camera. I get it. The thought of investing in family photos only to have a meltdown or chaos unfold can feel overwhelming.
But honestly? You should never let the fear of how your kids may act stop you from capturing these moments.
Family photos aren’t about forcing everyone into a perfect pose with stiff smiles. They’re about documenting who your family is right now, in this season of life. The giggles, the wiggly legs, the pouts, the playful chaos—all of it is part of your family’s story.
Some of my favorite family photos aren’t the ones where everyone is looking at the camera. They’re the ones where a child is running with wild joy, where a sibling is whispering something silly, or where a toddler is giving their best pouty face that will make the whole family laugh years later.
These are the moments that matter. The ones that make you feel something. The ones that tell a story!
I’ve seen it happen—parents start off excited, but as soon as they realize their child doesn’t want to sit still, the stress levels rise. But let me reassure you: I am calm, I am patient, and I love capturing all the silly, wild, unfiltered moments. There is no expectation for perfection here. I embrace the energy, the movement, and the unpredictability because that’s what makes these photos real.
Years from now, you won’t be reminiscing about how well your kids followed directions during a photo session. You’ll be looking at an image that takes you right back to this stage of life—their tiny hands wrapped around yours, their carefree laughter, or even the stubborn expressions that were so characteristic of them at this age.
The little quirks and personalities that seem frustrating in the moment? They’re what you’ll miss the most when they’re grown.
As a photographer, I don’t expect kids to sit perfectly still and follow every instruction. I work with them, not against them. I embrace their energy, their silliness, and even their moods to create images that feel real and authentic to your family. The best advice I can give? Relax, enjoy the moment, and let your children be themselves.
If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re worried about behavior, let this be your sign to go for it. Life moves fast, and these moments are fleeting. Let’s capture your family exactly as you are, in all the beautiful, messy, and love-filled ways that make you you.
Because one day, you’ll be so glad you did.
